How Google Does Design Sprints - Weekly Newsletter

Welcome to our weekly newsletter!

6 April 2025

Hey friend,

I'm currently struggling to deal with under-performance in my team. How to motivate, educate and assist the individual and get their projects back on track. Without getting destroyed myself. It is the most difficult part of the job. Ensuring progress, balancing responsibility and accountability.

Some Thoughts

“Decide in advance what you’re going to suck at.” ~ Oliver Burkeman

Author Oliver Burkeman suggests we should deliberately choose which areas of life we'll perform poorly in, rather than trying to excel at everything simultaneously. Just like spreading money too thin leaves you unable to make significant purchases, dividing your energy and attention across too many priorities means you'll achieve mediocrity in all of them. The key to success is deciding what truly matters most to you and accepting that other areas - whether it's a pristine house, a perfect inbox, or a thriving social calendar - will have to be "good enough”.

How Google Does Design Sprints

Sometimes a project gets stuck. You and your team find yourselves in a spot where you need to progress on a design issue, but it’s just not working. Perhaps you are struggling to get input from someone, or maybe you just can’t reach agreement.

Actively leading a design sprint is a strategy you should consider. It will allow you to make a leap that would otherwise be impossible. Luckily, Google has created the exact strategy you need.

Google’s design sprint methodology, developed by Jake Knapp and his team at Google Ventures, has revolutionized the way many organizations approach problem-solving and product development. This article will delve into the specifics of how Google executes design sprints, providing insights and practical advice for professionals like you.

What is a Design Sprint?

31 August 2025 Hey friends This week's newsletter has a bit of a career focus. Some things to help your career and some things to help you re-evaluate where you want to go. I have new, more senior positions opening up in my company, but I don't want to apply for them. And I've asked myself why this is. And there are a few reasons, I think. The first is that I'm quite happy with my life. I'm quite satisfied. I think that I earn a reasonable amount of money. Secondly, I have a reasonable amount...

24 August 2025 Hey friends I have new senior management starting soon and it's created a bit of fear in me and I wanted to examine why I have that fear. Is it because that I don't think I'm good enough? Is it because I'm scared that my way of working will be challenged? Is it because I'll be pushed out of my comfort zone? Or is it because I think that our team has already reached perfection and doesn't need change? If I was completely confident in myself and in my team, my processes and...

17 August 2025 Hey friends I am stretched super thin at the moment. I have too many hobbies. Too many pseudo-hobbies (half-work-half-hobby). Too much real, paying work. And what I find is the age-old truth: What you focus on, grows. What you neglect, withers. Even if I feel like I am still doing the bare minimum, I soon see that I am letting things slip. Giving things up is hard though. Do you feel like you are doing too much? Spread too thin? The Big Idea Are you doing more than ever but...
